Ibhabhathane Inset
(In Service Teacher Training)
In addition to bussing learners into the FJAC for lessons in visual art, craft and design, the Ibhabhathane Project also trains teachers from all areas of the Western Cape on alternative Saturday mornings each term. The educators learn through doing practical art projects that are appropriate for their learners. In addition, educators receive comprehensive worksheets on the theoretical aspects of art education to inform their practice. The attendance records prove that these workshops are both emotionally fulfilling to teachers themselves as well as a vitally important addition to their classroom practice. The FJAC also offers workshops in History of Art which are followed up with quality learning support material after each module. The WCED is recognising this service and some of the regional EMDC’s (Educational Management and Development Centres) are funding additional workshops in their areas. 120 educators attended workshops on the creative use of waste in nodal area of Kuils River in 2002. This EMDC has again funded workshops in visual art, music, puppetry, gumboot dancing and drama for 35 schools in Khayelitsha in the first quarter of 2003.
The Vumani Programme
(Enhancing effective classroom practice in Arts and Culture through mediation)
EMDC Central has given its support to the Ibhabhathane Project to use a teacher in the Vumani Programme. This teacher visits schools and assists educators in the practicalities of teaching Arts and Culture. This programme runs site-based workshops with school clusters and works at building relationships between FJAC, Ibhabhathane Project and WCED schools.
