Morning Classes

The Ibhabhthane Project (A project of the FJAC and Add On Education)

Financially independent of the WCED, the Ibhabhathane Project raises funds to bus 80 learners to the FJAC at least three days a week for four-hour art/design workshops. The class teachers accompany their classes and actively participate in the lesson, learning alongside their learners. In this was, INSET takes place in a practical, hands-on way.

We work in partnership with participating schools over a two year period so that teachers are given sufficient training to be able to provide quality art education in their schools at the end of the two-year cycle. We have recently begun to include music and drama within our programme, in keeping with the integrated Arts and Culture learning Area in OBE.

LSEN Learners (Learners with Special Education Needs)

Seven LSEN schools bus both primary and high school learners to the FJAC for art workshops in the morning. Many of these learners have been exposed to special projects and art exhibitions at the South African National Gallery (SANG) through our partnership with the on-going activities of the Special Needs component within the SANG Educational Programme.

Local Primary and High Schools

Five neighbourhood primary schools walk or transport two classes to the FJAC each term for four-hour morning workshops in art, craft or design. We work closely with the educators in setting specific projects for these classes according to the OBE theme being worked to ensure that a holistic integration of subjects can take place.

Grade 8 and 9 learners from six schools who do not have a trained art teacher are brought to the FJAC as part of the school’s Arts and Culture programme. We work closely with the schools in assessing these learners and enabling them to develop an appropriate portfolio for the end of the GET band. Many of these learners continue their art studies at the FJAC in the FET band, from Grade 10 to 12.
