Needle Felting

ALEXANDRA BOYLE
Needle Felting is a fun and easy technique through which you can create a wonderful range of craft and art. Needle felting is a popular fibre art craft conducted without the use of water. Special barbed felting needles that are used in industrial felting machines are used by the artist as a sculpting tool. Using a single needle or a small group of needles (2-5) in a hand-held tool, these needles sculpt the wool fibre. The barbs catch the scales on the fibre and push them through the layers of wool, tangling them and binding them together, much like the wet felting process. Fine details can be achieved using this technique, and it is popular for 2D and 3D felted work. Needle felting is often presented as an ancient Celtic art and has a wide range of uses. With this technique you can made wool ‘paintings’, toys, sculptures, jewelry, even stage props.

In this course we will undertake one or two smaller items to get the hang of the techniques; such as beads, broaches or small figures. We will also complete a larger ‘painting’ where you can choose to work in 2 or 3D. Visit my website www.threadingjoy.co.za to view some of the kinds of things that can be made.

Alexandra Boyle is a handwork teacher, crafter and owner of Threading Joy, a handwork programme introducing handwork skills to people of all ages. Her work will be on exhibition at Kamers vol Gesenke later in the year.
